My father used to tell us tales of his schooldays at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, where he, and his brothers before him, were sent as boarders from their home in distant Leamington Spa. His first term there was in the autumn of 1918, during the last months of WWI. I recognised many of his descriptions of the journey when in recent years I have had occasion to travel the West Coast mainline.
